Mentoring & Tutoring: The Craft of Storytelling
Writing is a solitary craft, but the development of that craft doesn't have to be. My mentoring sessions are designed for aspiring and established writers who seek a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in the writing process and story narrative development.
Drawing on my PhD research and work undertaken for the The Subtext: Fiction and the Art of Storytelling, I provide expert guidance that bridges the gap between creative intuition and narrative theory. Whether you are struggling with a specific manuscript or looking to master the structural elements of fiction, these sessions offer a dedicated space for your intellectual and creative development.
How We Work Together
1. Bespoke Fiction Theory We move beyond generic rules of writing to explore the mechanics of story. From the underpinnings of character motivation to the stakes of your plot, we apply high-level theory to your specific creative challenges.
2. Manuscript Workshopping Bring your "stuck" scenes to the table. In our sessions, we deconstruct your prose in order to identify the friction points in your narrative, before brainstorming structural solutions that honour your unique voice.
3. Long-Term Project Guidance For those embarking on a novel or a complex non-fiction project, I provide the accountability and strategic oversight needed to see it through. We set milestones, navigate the "middle-of-the-book" slump, and ensure your project stays aligned with its original intent.
4. The Business of Authorship As the founder of an independent publishing house, I help you navigate the landscape of modern publishing. We discuss positioning, query strategy, and the transition from "writer" to "published author."
